Hilary Brice

I was born in Yorkshire, but left when I was 12 to live in what was then Rhodesia. After a few years there we moved to Zambia, where I started work in shop display, doing all the price tickets by hand, long before computers! This gave me a love of calligraphy and painting. My father began doing wonderful paintings in pastels, so I tried that too and fell in love. Pastels are still my go to medium, though I also work in coloured pencils.

I really enjoy doing pet portraits, cats and dogs, but also wild life. Having visited various wild life parks in Africa I like painting elephants and the big cats.

Seascapes are another thing I enjoy painting, they can be so atmospheric, and pastels are ideal for this.

Belonging to the Bishop’s Stortford Art Society is very inspirational. To meet other talented artists and have the opportunity to exhibit my work is a bonus. I would encourage anyone with a love of art to join the society, it is really motivational to see the wonderful work done by members.
